DAILY DISCIPLINES OF AWARENESS
POSTURE.
While walking, keep your chin up and shoulders back, maintaining good posture. Use your eyes and notice the people around you, their actions, and the baseline, meaning the current state of the area you occupy. Is it quiet? Is it loud? How are people acting? If you know the current baseline, then you will also know when it changes.
NUTRITION.
Eat something every 2-3 hours and drink enough water throughout the day. A lack of nourishment and de-hydration can cause unneeded stress and a short fuse. Don’t get in the habit of being “hangry.” This is not a good recipe to deal with a variety of situations. Keep water and snacks in your car, backpack, purse, briefcase, office, etc.
BEHIND THE WHEEL.
When driving, if you are stopped at a light or in traffic, give enough room between you and the car in front of you, enough so you can see their back tires touching the pavement. This gives you a path out in an emergency.
Keep doors locked when driving or stopped. If your car does not have a setting to do this automatically, then practice doing it yourself every time you get in the car until it becomes routine.
BREATHWORK.
Practicing your breath is a powerful tool. Safety is not about coming up with the big solution to a situation right away. Rather it’s about starting with small steps, and you need proper breathing to do this. Set up a daily meditation practice for yourself. A few minutes of daily meditation will provide a variety of wonderful benefits. There are many types of meditation practices. Do some research to find the one that best suits you.
Breathing = Thought. Breathing = Action. Breathing = Power.
